I think this is the result of aggressive audience segmentation, as consumers are increasingly funneled into tight little buckets to quantify fans of an artist and make revenue projections. We as arts enjoyers have gobbled it up because identity markers are an easy currency in our often shallow online encounters. I, too, wish, we could be discussing the works themselves, and less justifying why we like them, or talking more about the artist’s personal life and business savvy or whatever than about their work.
